How to Grow Gooseberry
Bush Berry
Gooseberries are dependable compact bushes for gardens and allotments, producing sharp green, yellow or red fruit for eating fresh or cooking. Choose dessert or culinary varieties such as 'Invicta' or 'Hinnonmaki'. Their early flowers suit a sheltered sunny position, although light shade is tolerated.
Planting
Plant bare-root bushes from November to March, or container-grown plants when soil is workable. Set each plant at the same depth as in its pot, allowing 1.2 to 1.5 m between bushes. Water in thoroughly and mulch, keeping material clear of stems. Form an open goblet with four to six well-spaced main branches; this makes picking easier and improves air movement. A short cane may steady a young plant, but permanent support is rarely needed.

Maintain a permanent spur framework. Each winter remove congested, crossing or low shoots and retain an open goblet shape. In summer, shorten this season's side growth to five leaves, then reduce it to two buds in winter to build fruiting spurs. Remove suckers and shoots from the base promptly.
