How to Grow Loganberry
Bramble
Loganberries are vigorous hybrid berries with long arching canes and large, dark red fruit. Their rich, sharp-sweet flavour makes them a rewarding alternative to raspberries and blackberries. A thornless or less thorny selection, such as 'LY654', is particularly practical for a family garden or a well-managed allotment row.
Planting
Plant from autumn to early spring, spacing plants 2 to 2.5 m apart along a sturdy wire support. Set plants at the former soil level, water thoroughly and mulch with garden compost. Use posts with two or three horizontal wires, then tie canes in loosely as they grow. Keep new canes separate from fruiting canes where possible, which makes pruning and harvest much simpler. A south- or west-facing fence can provide useful warmth and protection.
Care & pruning
Loganberries fruit on last year's canes. After fruiting, cut the old fruited canes right to the base and tie in the strongest new canes on wires for next year. In late winter, shorten overly long cane tips and remove weak or crowded replacements. Mulch annually with garden compost and apply an organic fertiliser in spring. Water during dry spells, particularly while flowering and fruiting, and keep the base weed-free without damaging shallow roots.

Pick from late July to August, when berries are deep red, glossy and release with a gentle pull. Harvest every few days in dry weather, as ripe fruit softens quickly. Lift fruit carefully into shallow containers to prevent bruising, and net plants if birds are troublesome.
Common problems
Birds, particularly blackbirds, can strip a crop, so net the wire framework before fruit colours. Botrytis mould is more likely in dense, wet growth; train canes neatly, pick ripe fruit promptly and remove damaged berries. Aphids and raspberry beetle may occur, so inspect regularly and remove affected growth by hand. Good drainage, annual cane removal and clean mulch help reduce disease carry-over.
