How it works

The number of rows is the bed width divided by the row spacing, and the number of plants in each row is the bed length divided by the in-row spacing. Both are rounded down to whole plants:

Plants = floor(length ÷ in-row spacing) × floor(width ÷ row spacing)

For a simple square grid, set the two spacings the same. Check the recommended spacing on the seed packet or in our growing guides. Closer spacing gives more, smaller plants; wider spacing gives fewer, larger ones.
