Compost Tumbler
Technique
A compost tumbler is a raised rotating barrel that makes small, tidy batches of garden compost. Turning is quick and clean, making it attractive for patios and compact gardens. It can work faster than an untouched bin, but its limited volume means careful balancing and regular additions of browns are particularly important.
How it works
The sealed drum is filled with a balanced mix of chopped greens and browns, then rotated to introduce air and redistribute moisture. Its dark casing and enclosed shape can retain warmth, especially in sunny weather, but many models are too small to sustain the high temperatures of a large hot heap. Turn it every few days rather than continually, and leave enough space for contents to tumble. Once full, stop adding fresh material and allow that batch to mature. Finished compost is removed through the hatch after it is dark, crumbly and earthy.

Place the tumbler on stable, level ground with enough clearance to turn its handle safely. Start with plenty of shredded cardboard, dry leaves or straw, as kitchen scraps and grass alone can form wet clumps. Chop tougher material to speed breakdown and avoid overfilling. Keep out meat, fish, dairy, cooked food and dog or cat waste because they can attract vermin and create odours; bokashi is more suitable for food waste beyond ordinary composting rules. In a dry spell, add a little water; if material is slimy, add browns and turn. Empty the batch completely before restarting.

Keep a separate compost bin or leaf-mould store for surplus garden waste, as a tumbler fills quickly in autumn. A few handfuls of finished compost can introduce useful organisms to a new batch. Avoid material from manure, hay or grass with possible aminopyralid residues if the compost will be used for tomatoes, beans or potatoes.
