Technique
An open compost heap is the simplest large-scale setup for an allotment or roomy garden. Built in a bay or loose pile, it accepts generous quantities of leaves, prunings, grass clippings and spent plants. It is easy to turn with a fork, though it needs sensible siting and management to stay tidy and productive.
How it works
A broad heap holds more warmth than a small bin and has room for the mixing that compost needs. Build it from alternating additions of browns and greens, wetting dry material lightly as necessary. Air enters from the sides, while turning moves cooler outside material into the warmer centre and restarts decomposition. A heap around 1 m high and wide can be managed as a cold pile or built in one go for hot composting. Covering the top with a breathable sheet limits heavy rain without sealing out all air.

Use wooden bays, wire panels or a clearly defined corner to prevent material spreading. Site the heap on soil, away from watercourses and where a wheelbarrow can reach it easily. A two- or three-bay arrangement lets one heap mature while another is filled. Keep out meat, fish, dairy, cooked food and dog or cat waste, as open heaps are especially likely to attract vermin; use council-approved collections where available. Chop woody prunings and mix grass with leaves or cardboard. Do not put invasive roots or mature weed seeds into a cool heap unless you are prepared for them to survive.
