A few herb pots near the kitchen make everyday cooking more fragrant and economical. Containers let you match each herb to its preferred compost and prevent vigorous plants from spreading. Most herbs need bright light, but their watering needs vary greatly, especially between Mediterranean herbs and tender basil.

How to do it

Place herbs where you can pick them easily, ideally in sun or bright light. Fill most pots with peat-free multipurpose compost, but add grit or coarse material for rosemary, thyme and sage so their roots drain freely. Plant mint alone in its own pot to contain it. Keep basil on a warm windowsill, in a greenhouse or on a sheltered patio after frost risk has passed. Water when the compost begins to dry, allowing Mediterranean herbs to dry slightly between waterings. Snip stems little and often, cutting above leaf joints. Replace short-lived basil plants as they tire and divide congested perennial herbs in spring.

Rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano and marjoram thrive in sunny, free-draining containers. Parsley, chives, coriander and mint cope with cooler conditions if watered regularly. Basil is excellent on a warm windowsill or in a greenhouse. Bay makes a handsome longer-term pot plant in John Innes loam-based compost. Lemon balm is useful but deserves its own container because it can spread.
