Method

Watering is the key skill in container gardening because roots cannot search beyond the pot for moisture. Wind, sun and warm paving can dry compost surprisingly fast. A regular check prevents many problems, while thorough watering encourages roots to explore the whole container instead of staying close to the surface.

How to do it

Check containers daily in summer, and twice daily during very hot or windy spells. Push a finger a few centimetres into the compost or lift a small pot to judge moisture. Water the compost around the base of each plant, slowly enough for it to soak through and run from drainage holes. Repeat after a pause if dry compost sheds water. Water in the morning when practical, and avoid routinely wetting foliage. Use a watering can, hose, drip system or self-watering reservoir as suits the space. Collect rainwater in a water butt where possible, and keep access clear so watering never becomes a chore.

All container plants benefit from consistent moisture, but tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, peppers, salad leaves and strawberries are especially sensitive to drying out. Large pots of shrubs and herbs need less frequent attention than small baskets and window boxes. Rosemary, thyme and sage prefer to dry somewhat between waterings, whereas basil and lettuce need more reliably moist compost.
