How to Grow Tulip
Bulb
Tulips offer an extraordinary choice of colours, flower shapes and heights, from tiny species tulips to dramatic parrot and lily-flowered types. Their clear, bright blooms make spring pots and borders feel freshly composed. They are hardy in most UK gardens, though many showy bedding tulips are best treated as a renewed annual display.
Planting
Plant tulip bulbs in November, once the soil is cold, to help reduce the risk of tulip fire disease. Choose a sunny site with free-draining soil and set bulbs about two to three times their depth, usually 15 to 20 cm deep, with 10 to 15 cm between them. In containers, use fresh, free-draining compost and place bulbs closely without touching. Plant species tulips slightly earlier if needed, from October onwards.
Care
Water container-grown tulips when compost begins to dry, but do not leave pots standing in water. Remove faded flowers, then allow foliage to yellow naturally. In borders, bedding tulips often flower best when replaced annually; after flowering, lift them if you wish, dry the bulbs in an airy place and store them dry until autumn. Species tulips are more likely to return when given excellent drainage.

Tulips usually flower from March to May. Mild southern gardens often see the earliest varieties in March, while gardens in northern England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland may peak later. Early, mid-season and late selections can provide a long succession of spring flowers.
Garden uses
Use tulips in formal bedding, cottage-style borders, gravel gardens and generous pots. Their stems make excellent cut flowers, especially when harvested as coloured buds. Pair them with wallflowers, forget-me-nots, violas or fresh green euphorbia foliage. Species tulips suit sunny rockeries, the front of borders and containers, where their smaller scale can be appreciated.
Tips
Buy plump, undamaged bulbs and plant them promptly. Avoid repeatedly growing tulips in the same container compost, as disease can persist. For a strong display, choose several bulbs of one variety rather than scattered singles. Look for RHS Award of Garden Merit selections, and label varieties so you can repeat your favourites next autumn.
