When and how to sow

Plant bought specimens or divisions from March to May, after the soil has begun to warm; spring sowings can be raised in module trays or scattered thinly where plants are wanted. Choose sun or light shade and any reasonably well-drained garden soil. Allow 40 cm between plants. A large pot is useful where you wish to prevent spreading and self-sowing.

Care

Water plants while they establish and during lengthy dry weather, particularly in containers. Cut stems back after flowering, before seed forms, to keep the clump neat and encourage new leaves. In midsummer, shear the whole plant back to about 10 cm for a fresh flush. Divide crowded clumps in spring.
