Radishes

Radishes are among the fastest vegetables for a British kitchen garden, often moving from seed to salad within a few weeks. Their compact habit makes them ideal between slower crops or in containers. Successional sowing keeps roots crisp, mild and plentiful rather than producing a sudden glut.

When and how to sow

Sow summer radishes direct from March to September in shallow drills, little and often every two or three weeks. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded bed with fine, loose soil, and thin seedlings to about 3 to 5 cm apart. Water after sowing to settle the soil. Sow larger winter or mooli radishes from late July into August for autumn use.

Care

Keep soil consistently moist so roots swell evenly and remain mild. Thin promptly, then use the removed seedlings in salads if desired. A light mulch helps in dry weather. In hot spells, give summer radishes some afternoon shade and sow smaller batches to avoid roots becoming coarse.

Common problems

Flea beetles create tiny shot-holes in young leaves; fleece or fine mesh protects seedlings while they establish. Uneven watering can split roots, while overcrowding, heat or delay in lifting makes them woody and hot. Remove weeds so fast-growing radishes are not checked by competition.

Harvest

Pull summer radishes as soon as their shoulders reach a good size, usually within three to six weeks. Do not wait for every root in a row to mature; take the largest first. Lift winter radishes before severe ground freezing, or protect them with a mulch for later picking.
