Start with a small, simple layout, then adjust it as you learn how quickly your soil absorbs water.
Begin by mapping the bed and identifying plants that need similar amounts of water. A short row of tomatoes, a greenhouse border or a raised bed is an ideal first project. Measure the route from your tap or water butt to the furthest plant, allowing extra length for bends. Choose tubing and fittings designed to work together, plus a timer if you want automatic watering. Keep the arrangement accessible for inspection and weeding. Drip irrigation works best when lines lie on the soil beneath mulch, where they are protected from sun and wind but remain easy to find. Avoid placing lines directly against stems, which can keep crowns too wet.
Prepare the bed before laying the pipe. Weed thoroughly, level sharp stones and water the soil once so that an extremely dry surface does not repel the first irrigation. Mulch after testing the system. A 5 cm layer of garden compost, leaf mould or well-rotted manure keeps soil cooler and reduces evaporation, allowing drip lines to work more efficiently. Keep mulch clear of stems and inspect beneath it occasionally to confirm water is reaching the right places. Label shut-off points if several beds are connected, so you can water only the crops that need it. During wet weeks, turn the system off and check soil before restarting. Overwatering is just as unhelpful as drought because it excludes air from roots and can encourage soft, weak growth.
Maintain drip irrigation little and often. Once a week in active use, turn it on and inspect the whole run for leaks, blocked emitters and sections disturbed by wildlife, children or tools.
