How to Improve Sandy Soil
Sandy soil is easy to dig and warms quickly in spring, but it can dry out fast and lose nutrients after rain. The aim is not to change it overnight, but to build organic matter steadily so it holds more moisture and feeds plants more reliably.
Start by checking that the soil is genuinely sandy. Rub a damp handful between your fingers: sandy soil feels gritty, falls apart readily and will not form a smooth ribbon when squeezed. Notice where plants wilt first after dry weather, as this identifies the most urgent beds.
