How to Test Soil Drainage

A simple drainage test shows how quickly water moves through soil and helps you choose plants, improve beds or decide whether raised growing is worthwhile. Test more than one place, because drainage often changes across a garden or allotment, especially near paths, buildings and compacted ground.

Choose a representative dry-weather day, but do not test during a prolonged drought because extremely dry soil can initially repel water. Mark a spot where you intend to plant, avoiding recently dug ground, drains and obvious hollows. If a bed contains different areas, test the highest and lowest points separately. Look first for clues: standing puddles after rain, mossy patches, stunted plants and a sour smell can all suggest slow drainage. Conversely, soil that cracks, feels dusty and dries immediately after watering may drain very quickly. Record the date, recent weather and location in a notebook. This context makes the results more useful than one number taken in isolation, particularly in gardens with varied soil or shade.

Dig a hole about 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep, keeping the sides as straight as practical. Remove loose soil from the base without compressing it. If you strike a layer of rubble, compacted subsoil or a buried root, move to a nearby representative position and note why. Fill the hole with water and allow it to drain completely. This first filling wets the surrounding soil and prevents an unusually dry profile from giving a misleadingly quick result. In very dry sandy ground, repeat the pre-soak if water disappears within minutes. Do not add detergent, fertiliser or anything else to the water. Plain rainwater from a water butt or tap water is all that is needed for a useful household test.

Refill the pre-soaked hole to the brim and measure the water depth with a ruler marked in centimetres. Note the time, then measure the depth again after 30 minutes and at regular intervals until it is empty. Divide the fall in water level by the elapsed time to estimate how many centimetres drain per hour. You do not need laboratory precision: the purpose is to compare parts of your garden and spot extremes. Repeat the test at least twice in each chosen area, preferably on different days with similar conditions. If one result is very different, inspect the hole for a compacted side or an underground obstruction before drawing conclusions. Keep all measurements with the bed name.

Interpret the pattern alongside what you observe after rain. Water remaining for many hours can indicate slow drainage, while a rapid fall suggests free-draining or sandy soil. Slow drainage does not always mean a problem: damp-loving plants may thrive, and a low area may simply collect runoff from elsewhere. However, vegetables and many shrubs struggle if their roots sit in saturated soil through winter. Fast drainage can mean plants need more organic matter and careful watering. Soil temperature, recent rainfall, slope and nearby hard surfaces all affect results. Compare the same bed over time rather than judging it against a single universal ideal. If water levels remain unchanged, stop the test and investigate whether the hole has reached dense clay or compacted ground.

For slow-draining soil, avoid digging when wet, as this compresses the structure further. Spread garden compost or well-rotted manure on the surface each year, and consider growing vegetables in raised beds filled with soil and peat-free compost. Create gentle routes for surface water where appropriate, but do not direct it towards a neighbour's garden or building. If compaction is the issue, push a garden fork into dry-ish soil and ease it back without turning over layers; this can open channels for air and water. Deep-rooted green manures such as field beans may also help over time. Persistent waterlogging near a house or a sudden change in drainage deserves professional advice.

For very free-draining soil, use the result to plan moisture conservation rather than trying to make it behave like clay. Add garden compost, leaf mould and well-rotted manure annually, then mulch crops after planting. Water young plants slowly so water reaches below the surface, and check moisture several centimetres down before watering again. Group thirsty vegetables such as courgettes together where watering is easiest. Consider a sheltered position for plants that dislike drying winds. Repeat the drainage test after several seasons of adding organic matter to see whether water is held more evenly. The goal is balanced, reliable moisture around roots, not simply the slowest possible drainage.

How many drainage tests should I do?

Do at least two tests in each distinct area, such as a vegetable bed, lawn edge and low border. Larger gardens and allotments may need more. Test both a high and low point where the land slopes. Repeated results reveal variation caused by compaction, buried material, shade or water flowing from paths and roofs.

Does slow drainage mean I must install drains?

Not necessarily. First check for compacted soil, blocked runoff routes and a low-lying position, then improve structure with organic matter and adjust planting choices. Raised beds can be enough for vegetables. Formal drainage is a bigger decision and may not suit every site, especially where it could affect neighbouring land, buildings or local watercourses.
