Raised Beds vs Growing in the Ground

Raised beds and in-ground plots can both produce excellent vegetables in a British garden or allotment. The best choice depends on your soil, space, budget and how easily you can tend the plot. Use this guide to assess your site, set up either method well, and combine them where that is most useful.

Start by looking closely at the site before buying timber or digging. Check how many hours of sun it receives between April and September, where rain collects, and whether nearby trees compete for moisture. Dig a small hole to inspect the soil: a crumbly loam is ideal, while heavy clay, stony ground or compacted subsoil may favour raised beds. If the plot has been cultivated successfully before, growing in the ground is often the cheapest, simplest route. Avoid placing either system over persistent perennial weeds without first removing or suppressing them. Mark paths so you can reach every growing area without treading on soil, because repeated footfall compacts it and makes roots struggle.

Choose raised beds where drainage is poor, soil is contaminated or hard to improve, or bending is difficult. A bed 90 to 120 cm wide lets you reach its centre from either side; make paths wide enough for a wheelbarrow where possible. Keep the height modest unless access requires more, as deep beds need considerable filling. Use durable untreated materials suitable for food-growing areas, and line the base only if the ground contains troublesome perennial roots. Fill with a mixture of existing topsoil, garden compost and well-rotted manure, rather than relying entirely on bought compost. The aim is a firm, moisture-retentive growing medium, not a loose mound that dries quickly.

For in-ground growing, improve the soil gradually rather than attempting to replace it. In autumn or late winter, spread a 5 cm layer of garden compost or well-rotted manure over the surface, leaving worms and weather to work it in. On heavy clay, avoid digging or walking on soil when wet, as this damages its structure. On sandy soil, add organic matter regularly to help hold water and nutrients. Create permanent beds, usually 90 to 120 cm wide, with narrow paths between them. This concentrates cultivation and reduces compaction. An in-ground plot usually stays cooler and wetter in spring than a raised bed, which can be helpful in dry summers but slow early sowings.

Prepare raised beds several weeks before sowing or planting. Level the surface, remove stones and roots, then lightly firm the soil with the back of a rake. Top up each spring with 3 to 5 cm of garden compost, taking care not to bury the crowns of perennial herbs. Raised beds warm earlier, so salads, radishes and peas may start sooner, especially in southern gardens. They also drain quickly, so check moisture beneath the surface rather than judging by a dry-looking top layer. Mulch established plants with compost, leaf mould or clean grass clippings. Water deeply at the root zone, ideally using stored water from a water butt, instead of giving frequent light sprinkles.

Match crops to the method rather than treating either as universally better. Raised beds suit carrots where soil is stony, compact salad crops, beetroot and short-rooted herbs. They are also useful for brassicas if you need netting supports fixed securely around the bed. In-ground plots are excellent for potatoes, squash, sweetcorn and long rows of peas or beans, which can use larger areas economically. Deep-rooted parsnips and leeks often thrive in well-prepared ground. Keep thirsty crops together, whichever method you use, so watering is efficient. Rotate crop families from year to year where space allows, particularly brassicas and onions, to reduce recurring pest and disease problems.

Use a simple comparison during the first season and adjust next year. Record sowing dates, harvests, watering and crops that struggled in each area. If raised beds dry out repeatedly, increase organic matter and mulch rather than adding ever more fertiliser. If ground beds remain waterlogged, add compost, improve paths and consider a shallow raised growing area rather than a very tall structure. Many productive gardens use both: raised beds close to the house for salads and frequent harvesting, and ground plots for space-hungry crops. Clear spent plants promptly, add healthy material to the compost heap or bin, and cover bare soil with compost or a green manure before winter.

Are raised beds warmer than soil at ground level?

Usually, yes. Their exposed sides and improved drainage mean raised beds tend to warm a little earlier in spring, especially in a sunny position. That can help early salads and peas, but they also lose moisture more quickly in dry or windy weather. In northern gardens, fleece or a cloche may still be needed for early crops.

Do I need to replace the soil in a raised bed every year?

No. Healthy raised-bed soil improves with regular additions of garden compost and well-rotted manure. Remove weeds and old crop roots, then spread a thin annual mulch over the surface. Replace soil only if it is badly contaminated, severely compacted or repeatedly affected by a difficult problem that cannot be managed through rotation and hygiene.

Can I put a raised bed directly onto grass?

Yes, provided you first remove the turf or cover it thoroughly with plain cardboard, then add a substantial depth of growing medium. Persistent weeds can push through gaps, so overlap the cardboard and keep edges clear. Do not use glossy printed material. A bed over grass needs enough soil depth for the crops you plan to grow.
