Field Scabious is a graceful British native perennial, bearing lilac-blue pincushion flowers on tall, branching stems. It flowers for much of summer above meadow grasses, bringing movement and a soft, airy texture. Its distinctive blooms make it an excellent choice for a sunny, naturalistic wildlife garden.
Why grow it

How to grow it
Give Field Scabious full sun and well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil, preferably moderate or low in fertility. It performs particularly well on chalky ground and can tolerate dry periods once established. Sow UK native-origin seed in autumn or spring on bare, raked soil, pressing it gently into the surface, or plant plugs 30 to 45 cm apart. Water in dry weather during the first growing season. Cut meadow planting after seed fall in late summer and remove cuttings.

Bumblebees, honeybees and solitary bees work the nectar-rich pincushions, alongside hoverflies and day-flying moths. Field Scabious is also associated with the bee moth, whose caterpillars use scabious species. Butterflies such as meadow brown and small skipper may visit the flowers, making it a valuable long-season nectar source.
Tips
Support taller stems only in very exposed gardens; in a meadow, neighbouring grasses usually do the job. Do not overfeed it. Leave a few seedheads for winter interest, then tidy in late winter. Buy UK native-origin stock from reputable suppliers, never from the wild.
