Teasel is a bold British native biennial with prickly stems, oval purple flower bands and unforgettable egg-shaped seedheads. It forms a leafy rosette in its first year, then sends up tall architectural stems in the second. It is perfect for a spacious, informal wildlife border, meadow edge or dampish sunny corner.
Why grow it
Teasel brings year-round drama as well as serious wildlife value. Summer flowers are rich in insect activity, while the persistent seedheads are a favourite winter feature for goldfinches. How to grow it
Grow Teasel in sun or light shade, in moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of ordinary soils and often performs well beside a hedge, pond margin or meadow edge, provided the site is not waterlogged. Sow UK native-origin seed in autumn or spring onto prepared bare soil, or plant young rosettes 45 to 60 cm apart. Water while young. Let a few seedheads ripen for self-seeding, then remove surplus seedlings before they crowd other plants.

Bumblebees, honeybees, solitary bees, hoverflies and butterflies visit the flowers. In autumn and winter, goldfinches are particularly drawn to the seeds, with other small birds also investigating the heads. The tall stems provide overwintering shelter for insects, so retain them until late winter wherever space allows.
Tips
Give Teasel room and expect a changing display over its two-year life cycle. Leave enough ripened heads for birds, but manage self-sown rosettes to keep the planting balanced. Use UK native-origin plants or seed from reputable suppliers and never take rosettes or seedheads from the wild.
