A cloche is a clear cover placed over individual plants or short stretches of a bed to trap warmth and shelter crops. It is a simple, movable way to start sowing earlier, protect young plants from cold winds and keep autumn crops productive after outdoor conditions begin to deteriorate.
How it works
Glass or clear plastic lets sunlight warm the soil and air beneath the cover, while reducing heat loss to wind. This creates a small protected microclimate around plants or a row. Cloches also keep rain from battering seedlings. Because the space is small, it can heat up rapidly and needs regular ventilation to avoid weak growth, scorching or damp conditions.
