Horticultural fleece is a lightweight woven cover that can be laid directly over crops or supported on hoops. It is one of the quickest UK methods for protecting plants from a few degrees of frost, reducing wind chill and bringing soil and seedlings forward in spring.
How it works
The fabric traps a layer of still air around the plants, slowing heat loss while allowing water and light through. It softens cold winds and reduces damage from light frost, although protection varies with thickness and weather. Fleece can also help exclude some pests when edges are sealed. It is not a substitute for ventilation in warm weather or for protection during severe, prolonged frost.
Best for
Cover potatoes emerging early, young brassicas, carrots, salad leaves, beetroot, French beans and newly planted courgettes. It is particularly useful for hardening off tender plants and for extending autumn crops such as salad leaves and spinach. Use it in exposed plots, where wind makes temperatures feel colder and seedlings struggle to establish.
How to use it
Lay fleece loosely over a well-watered crop, allowing enough slack for plants to grow, then secure every edge with soil, pegs or weights. Alternatively, drape it over low hoops to prevent crushing delicate leaves. Put it in place before a cold night rather than after damage occurs. Lift it regularly to weed, water and inspect plants. Remove or open it on warm days, especially once flowers need pollinating or growth becomes crowded.
Tips
Keep a clean, dry roll ready for sudden late frosts. Replace torn fleece, as gaps admit cold wind and pests. Do not pull it tightly across growing plants. Mark covered rows clearly so they are not stepped on, and dry fleece before storing it after the season.
