Chalky soil is usually alkaline, often shallow and commonly free-draining, particularly where chalk lies close beneath the surface. It can grow excellent lime-loving plants, but some nutrients become less available at high pH. The practical approach is to build organic matter, conserve moisture and select plants suited to alkaline ground.
What it is
Chalky or limy soil may contain visible white stones or fragments of chalk and can fizz when tested with a suitable soil-testing product. It is generally alkaline, sometimes strongly so, and may be thin over solid chalk. Its texture varies: some chalk soils are stony and dry, while others contain enough clay to be heavier. High pH can make iron and other nutrients difficult for certain plants to take up, leading to yellow leaves with greener veins. Acid-loving plants often struggle. The soil warms readily but can dry out quickly in summer.
What to do
Test soil pH before making changes, then accept the basic character of chalky ground rather than repeatedly trying to acidify an entire border. Add garden compost, well-rotted manure and leaf mould to improve water retention, soil life and nutrient availability. Mulch crops during dry weather and plant into sufficiently deep, improved soil where topsoil is shallow. Choose lime-tolerant vegetables and ornamentals, and grow acid-loving favourites in containers filled with suitable peat-free compost. If chlorosis persists, seek advice from the RHS or a local garden centre about plant choice and soil care.
